Guiseppe Arcimboldo (1527 – 1593) was born
in Milan, Italy, the son of a distinguished Milanese
family. As a young man, he worked with his father
for Milan Cathedral.

Arcimboldo designed tapestries for Como Cathedral
and during his lifetime he also worked as a draughtsman
and painter. He is most famous for his series of composite
portraits made up from a variety of natural objects.
Most of this painting was done at the courts of Rudolf
II of the Hapsburg dynasty, who hired him as court
painter.

Shortly before his death, Arcimboldo returned to
his home town of Milan, where he died aged 66.
