The Art Man

When perspective is used in a picture to make things appear to go into the distance, the artist uses what is called a vanishing point. This is a spot on the painting from where lines radiate out. At the end of the sketch, these lines are then removed. Objects that have parallel lines in them are placed along these lines. The closer the object is to the vanishing point, the smaller it will have to be to fit between the lines.

The Art Man

Look at this row of cottages fitted into these lines. The top and bottom line of the roofs, the bottom of the walls, and the top and bottom lines of the window, (all of which would be parallel and horizontal, when looked at from the front), now sit along the lines going to the vanishing point.
When the lines are removed, the row of houses carries on into the distance.
