Henry VII

I am Henry VII. I was born in January 1457 in Lancaster. Although my father Edmund Tudor was a distant relative to the Welsh Throne, it was through my mother, Margaret Beaufort's family that I could make a claim for the English throne.
I defeated Richard III at Bosworth, and married his niece Elizabeth of York, who was Edward IV's daughter also. As the big families of York and Lancaster had been fighting for years about who should be King, this sorted out the problem completely. The fact that she was really nice, helped a lot! We had seven children, but only 2 girls and 2 boys survived childhood.
I had to work hard at getting the English people to respect their king, to stop anyone else wanting to be king, and to make people pay their taxes. All the battles over the years had made people very fed up, and had cost lots of money. However, I didn't spend much money, saved a lot, and made sure that no-one else wanted the throne, so by the time my eldest son Arthur would get to the throne, it would be secure for him.
