The River Meon Study Pack - Stage 1
This pack has been created by the members of the Swanmore Geography
Pyramid.
An Introduction
1. Look at posters, pictures, videos of rivers.
Use these to generate group brainstorming.
a) Physical Characteristics:
a list of "river words" to use when describing the
form of a river. Sequence these words in order from the river's
"beginning" to its "end."
(What have we seen? What do we already know about rivers?)
b) The ways in which people use rivers:
Sequence these from the most useful to the least useful as a
group discussion activity. Record this sequence.
2. Look at OS maps. Sheet 185 and 196
Name rivers in our area.
Extension: Which way do they flow? How can we tell? Extension:
Use of spot heights. Discuss these. How might these help us to
work out which way the river flows?
